A blank Blu-ray DVD-R is a recordable optical disc format that is the same size as its predecessor, the DVD, but offers a much higher storage capacity at 25 GB – able to hold 5 times the amount of information that can be stored on a DVD, in fact. This is due to the 405 nm blue laser (hence the name Blu-ray) that is used to read the discs (a regular DVD uses a 650 nm red laser). There are also dual layer discs that have a 50 GB capacity. The Blu-ray disc was officially released in June of 2006 and offers the highest definition of all optical media today.
