A dual layer DVD-R is a recordable DVD disc, but it has an additional disc layer than a regular DVD-R allowing it to hold and store more information (a dual layer DVD-R can store 8.54GB whereas a single layer DVD-R can hold 4.7GB). These discs can still be read in most DVD devices but must be written using a DVD-R DL compatible recorder. Because of the double capacity of a dual layer DVD-R they sometimes have slower write speeds as compared to ordinary DVDs and when played a slight pause during transition can sometimes be seen between the layers.
